Derrick Clifton

Drawing

Derrick Clifton has been drawing since he was very young.  A native of Dickson TN, he experimented with paints and pastels in his early years, but always had a passion for charcoal and graphite.  While attending college, a professor encouraged him to take a 'pick something and do it well' approach with his art.  Feeling very liberated by this, Derrick decided to develop his style by working exclusively with charcoal.  In 2005, while living in Colorado, he accepted a commission to draw something that he had always avoided, the portrait of a face.  Ironically, he has drawn mostly faces ever since.  In 2006, he began drawing portraits for many clients that share his love for intensely 'colorful' black and white art, and has displayed his portraits in public and private galleries in the middle Tennessee area.

Derrick lives with his wife and daughter in Franklin, TN.  He is Co-Headmaster of Stone Table School, where he teaches English and Art.  Those interested in commissioning Derrick to draw a charcoal portrait (of any subject), please feel free to contact him.

Mark Currier
Fine Art Photographer

Dad was an advanced amateur photographer (among his many other technical skills and interests) and it inspired me at the age of 4 to ask for a camera. I have been seeing the world (quite literally) through a camera lens ever since (sometimes to my wife's distress). I love to capture moments and scenes that will never again happen quite the same way. I constantly wonder how EVERYTHING looks through a lens.

No formal photography training other than a 6 week class in tenth grade high school, otherwise I am completely self-taught. I have always been an information sponge and read everything I can find about whatever subject it is that I am currently studying until I know more about it than most people. If I am interested in something, I must know everything that there is to know about it, and if my questions are still not answered, then I will become the authority on that subject and find the answers to then share with others.

I have traveled the world and seen many wonderful things, many of which I have captured for others to see.  I love to share my experiences with others.

Angela Faye Daniel

Photographer

Angela's passion is photography with a focus on farm animals. She portrays ordinary animals (cows, pigs, goats and other commonplace animals) to show their real beauty and fun personalities. Having access to her sister's farm in New Boston, MO, she is able to capture the animals in a very genuine, fun and sometimes quirky predicament. Angie says, "The ability of the camera to freeze a moment in time and preserve it for others to view has always intrigued me."

joyce darden

Painter

Joyce was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine, then moved to Nashville in the 60's and resided there for approximately 40 years working as a legal secretary.  After retiring from the legal field, and in order to get away from the fast lane of Nashville, she moved to a little town called Hohenwald, TN, where she has been residing since 2000.  Having always loved art (in any and all forms), she began painting classes sometime in '01/'02 and has continued to paint on her own (taking classes intermittently).  She is constantly discovering our world, filled with color and form, and interpret the beauty of what her eyes see. For her, painting is a way for her spirit to be free while her brush forms images in color which never ceases to amaze her.

Susan Estes DeGarmo

Altered Books, Fine Art

After 27 years in graphic design, Susan has begun to branch out into other areas of creativity. An Assistant Professor at O'More College of Design, her students wanted more of a hands-on type of class instead of always being on the computer. She had an interest in altered books and decided that was the class she wanted to teach and the students loved it and so did she.

Susan had always been an illustrator... greeting cards for DaySpring, illustrations for Memphis Magazine... but had never painted. She began painting when a friend double-dog-dared her to paint a portrait of her son. She did and her friend loved it. So began her painting career.

Josephine Dye

Born in Mississippi, she became amazed at the beauty of the Southern Magnolias. This sparked her interest so then she started to research and photograph other species native to her home state. This in turn lead her to discover a talent that enabled her to develop a more unique and personal style of painting.

In 1990, she enrolled in the Bob Ross Certification Program at the Murfreesboro, TN campus.  She became a certified instructor in Landscape and Floral techniques.  After which, she enrolled at the New Smyrna Beach, Florida campus and completed her certification in Wildlife and Portrait. This development lead to a greater understanding of teaching and enhanced her life with her students. She also holds a certificate as a Master Teacher of The Michael Wilcox School of Color in England.

Eric L. Hansen

Photographer / Painter

Eric L Hansen's color images are deeply personal storyboards of his own connections to post-modern American culture. Philip Brookman, head curator at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC, called his work “An enduring vision that will enable us to see the world in a new way.” Eric is published in the Lucie-Award winning journal Eyemazing. He recently won the Pollux Award’s international prize for best fine art photography, exhibition in Buenos Aires, January 2012. His collectors include the actress Drew Barrymore.

From the beginning, Eric cannot remember a time when he was not drawing and painting. He was born in Staten Island, New York City, and later went to grammar school in Bayside, Queens. His first toys were crayons, fat pencils, watercolors, tempera paints, and special papers. When he was 10, his grandmother gave him a point-and-shoot film camera. While he continued to draw and paint, after that he never stopped making pictures with cameras.

2002 marked the beginning of Eric’s emergence onto the national art scene. He held his first solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2004. He finaled in Photolucida’s Critical Mass competition in 2006, followed by a solo exhibition at the George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles in 2007.

Museum directors who have curated his work include: Curator of Photography at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Malcolm Daniel, Director of Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art Robert Fitzpatrick, Director of the Smithsonian Museum of American Art Joann Moser.

Julie Harvey

Painter

Julie Harvey is a visual artist from Franklin, Tennessee.  Her images are abstracted dream-like visuals that come from the quiet and dark places one might expect, but they are also quite approachable at the same time.  The paintings are usually on large canvases, varying in size up to as large as 60” x 60”.  The subjects are deconstructed, distorted versions of objects or organic bodies, but sometimes they are less literal, leaving the door open to interpretation.  Her goal in each painting is to ignite some kind of personal reaction that relates to others in some way, so she usually keeps any kind of psychology or concept about the work to herself and lets the viewer decide on the meaning.  Brushes are used for soft areas, blended colors, and transparent washes; trowels layer on the large patches of color and texture; and knives do the digging, tearing, and scratching-through that make up the grit you will find in her work.  She has a large number of finished pieces available for viewing via email or the web for any prospective buyers or anyone interested in showing her work.

Shari Lacy

Artist

Shari Lacy is an artist with a small home studio in Franklin, TN.  A graduate of Miami University/Oxford, OH's Fine Arts program, she is a life-long and college trained artist yet primarily a self taught painter.  Much of what she has learned comes from her interaction and observation of people and life in general and other art specifically. She loves to experiment with natural tones as well as colors, water color, sketches, textures and acrylics, and developed some of her techniques by taking a variety of different classes throughout  the years.

Primarily working with textured mediums and acrylics on canvas, you'll also find a watercolor and/or sketch sneaking their way into her portfolio every now and then. She is very intrigued by the surface and edges of the canvas and how different pressures, paint thickness, brush sizes, etc. can bring out different emotions in a painting. Shari  has always been fascinated by the creative process; one stroke leading to the next, one sketch leading to another, all finding themselves to be an important part of that finished puzzle called a piece of art.

Shari owns PR company and has taken on creative design projects and commissioned work for years.  She's also an avid writer, so she makes every attempt possible to marry her love of words and art. Many of her pieces include some sort of inspirational word or quote.  She loves to study artists of all styles, but searches for the works of those with a similar free-handed touch.

Stellasue Lee
Poet

Stellasue Lee's work comes from a place deep within. Her poems explore the human experience in accessible images and moments.  Yusef Komunyakka said of her work, “Reading Stellasue’s poems take us to a sense of place, to loved ones by way of sharp turns and hair-pin curves. I believe and trust her voices captured in these poems that drive us toward the vortex of what matters.”  Twice an entrant for the Pulitzer Prize, she has been published in numerous literary journals.

Poetry is a form that enables her to understand the inner core of her life.  It permits an uncritical gaze that changes the course of her thinking. She is known to ask her new students “Seize your critic by the scruff of the neck, and lock him up.” She believes that’s where her critic belongs as well, locked away.

In addition to her journal publications, Stellasue’s work appears in three volumes, After I fall, a collection of four Los Angeles poets, Over to you, an exchange of poems with David Widup, and 13 Los Angeles Poets, the ONTHEBUSH Poets Series Number One. (Bombshelter Press) The two books of her work, Crossing The Double Yellow Line and firecracker RED have caught the eye of the Pulitzer committee.

She received her Ph.D. in English Literature from Honolulu University. Now Editor Emeritus at RATTLE, a literary journal, she serves presently on the editorial board at Curbstone Press, www.curbstone.org. She teaches individually and at writers’ workshops. She was born in the year of the dragon.

Carla J. Mazzone ~ Heart Felt Inspirations
Felt Artist

Nature has always had a big influence on Carla’s life and work.  Whether she is painting, photographing or felting she is drawn to the wondrous expressions of texture and light in nature.
It is just in the past few years that the ancient art of felt making has peaked her interest.  A nurse by profession, she taught herself to make felt while recovering from a recent illness.  “The textures of the various wools, the hand dyed and hand spun yarns are so inspiring,  I want to touch them all and bring them home. I typically use a wide variety of wools and silk in my creations."  My inventory includes purses, scarves, hats and wall art.

Traditional felting (wet felting) is the act of layering wool fibers on a surface or around a form (called a resist).  The pile of fibers is then sprinkled with soapy water and gently pressed together by hand until the fabric becomes stable.  Then a more rigorous hand process is utilized to shrink and strengthen the nonwoven fabric.  Once it is completely fulled or hardened, the soap is rinsed out, the fabric is shaped and left to dry.  I  often then embellish the item further with glass beads or hand stitching.

My studio is located in Fairview, TN, about 25 miles west of Nashville. You can see a variety of my work at my website. Randy L Purcell ~ Creative Artist

Paintings and Mixed Media

My creations represent; fragments of dreams, memories, and my imagination. I have collected these thoughts in sketchbooks and journals for several years. While these simple drawings or short stories mean little to others, in my mind they reflect my life’s experiences. To share these interest and experiences I make Art using the materials that I feel best communicate my vision of a particular moment or place.

Trish Scheer

Reverse Painting on Vintage Windows

Trish Scheer is a self taught, local artist who reverse paints on vintage windows.  This unusual method of painting is done by details and highlights being layered in first, then worked in reverse, ending with the background; opposite of how a traditional painting is done.  Her works are intricately detailed, brightly colored pieces that are filled with shiny metallic and iridescent paints framed by a variety interesting windows.

Trish has been using this medium for a little over a year in what started out as a personal garden project.  The paintings drew attention and morphed into selling and exhibiting right from the beginning; her work has been featured in the Nashville Scene’s Critics Picks and she participated in Art Fusion 2010.

~ Maru Arts

Signature "Maru"

Every blank canvas is a puzzle, a puzzle to be solved because you have the idea in your mind. All the colors, the composition, the depth, the technique - it all sits in your mind. . . and then! It happens, it doesn't happen. It is just like a puzzle being put together - that color worked, that one didn't. And so you keep working the puzzle until it comes together.

Norb Skalski

Artist

Norb's work is driven by the core of human existence, emotion, and it's external presence. He's sees himself as a social critic who has developed expressionistic style in the context of Van Gogh, Picasso, as well as such abstract expressionists as Nolde, Kirschner and Munch.

Primarily interested in figurative art composition, he has always avoided easy moralistic judgements, preferring to explore primal human characteristics that become apparent to the viewer only after he or she has spent ample time considering them.

Don Stewart

Pen and Ink

Former physician Don Stewart takes an intellectual, yet humorous approach to art. The artist’s preferred medium, a holdover from his academic past, accounts for the crisp detail in his whimsical drawings. Ballpoint lines bring out tones and textures unattainable with conventional pen and ink, allowing his fine black and white renderings come alive with hidden images and visual puns.
